North Beach is the fourth Gulf Coast mystery/thriller by the author of Thin Slice of Life, La Salle’s Ghost, and Ransom Island. It’s 1962 on the Texas Gulf Coast, and 15-year-old Charlie Sweetwater and his brother, Johnny, are happily oblivious to the world’s problems. Charlie’s main concerns are qualifying for an upcoming Golden Gloves boxing tournament, ducking a local bully and, with any luck, stealing a kiss from Carmen Delfín, the prettiest girl he’s ever laid eyes on. Charlie’s last innocent summer ends abruptly when his boxing coach is murdered and his friend, a black Cuban boxer named Jesse Martel, is accused of the crime. Their problems are compounded when Jesse becomes a political pawn in a high-stakes contest between Cuba and the CIA—a contest that intensifies when the Cuban Missile Crises begins, and the world’s two superpowers come within an eye blink of mutual destruction. Through it all, Charlie and his brother are convinced that Jesse is innocent, and they are determined to find the real murderer—a remorseless killer who is stalking more victims—and clear Jesse’s name before time runs out. Suddenly the Sweetwater boys find themselves navigating through a world that is much bigger, more complicated, and scarier than they ever imagined.

The reader is immersed once again in a setting from long ago and yet strangely familiar, especially to those who grew up in the Sixties on the Gulf Coast. Our heroes, the Sweetwater boys, have matured from the sandy little tykes who played at the feet of the characters in Ransom Island. They are now typical teenagers, and, like the older generation of their family, are drawn into an exciting and deadly mystery. If I had a criticism of this novel it would be with the intertwined and elliptical background of youth boxing in south Texas in the Sixties. While some of this information is necessary to the main plot, too much causes the pace to drag. Thankfully the appeal of these characters, the flawless setting and the unfolding mystery rescue this story from dullness.
I have one more in this series to read and I am already going through withdrawal pangs. Guys, hopefully you all are getting ready to release another book because I am already regretting having to say farewell to the beloved Sweetwater clan.

North Beach Miles Arceneaux 9780996879712 Books Reviews
Great story! Fun reading! Makes you long for the old days. I live near Corpus so some of those locations are familiar. I still need to read the other 2 books in the series.
I have read all of this author's books and he is very entertaining and always he has a mystery to be solved. I thought La Salle's Ghost was the best on in terms of intrigue and suspense, but I have thoroughly enjoyed all of them. I look forward to the next one.
i loved this book. it is the best of the four. sorry bro
Hardy Boys for adults. Having lived in Corpus Christi, it was fun reading about familiar places. Want to read the authors' other books!
I've read all 4 books by Miles Arceneaux and am delighted by the way history, intrigue and humor are woven into the stories. In North Beach it is good to see the Sweetwater boys fearlessly standing by their family and friends while coming of age. I wondered why these books were published in reverse chronological order but after reading North Beach it made me want to go back and revisit Thin Slice of Life to see some of my favorite salty characters again. I can't wait to see what's next. Keep the books coming Miles!
And, here we go again...North Beach takes you right back to the Texas coast and the adventures of the Sweetwater boys, this time as teenagers. After reading (and loving) Arceneaux's three earlier novels,Thin Slice of Life, LaSalle's Ghost and Ransom Island, I was delighted when another appeared. I couldn't wait to read it and I wasn't disappointed. Arceneaux's characters are so funny and so quirky, it's hard to put his books down once you pick them up.
I am so glad to find this author. Sine I live in San Antonio I recognize the sites mentioned in all these books. Easy reading and are now circulating through my granddaughters.
